Working under the supervision of the Optical Manager, the Optician is primarily responsible for helping patients through the ordering of prescription eyewear. This entails measuring, fitting, and ordering lenses and frames for patients according to written optical prescription and/or specification of the doctor. The Optician is also responsible for the final inspection and verification of incoming ophthalmic jobs from lab vendors. The other duties of the Optician include maintaining accurate optical records, administrative work and providing quality patient care in a fast-paced setting.

Representative Duties:

Assist with optical needs and orders

  • Measure patient for pupillary distance, fitting heights and position of wear measurements, either manually or with digital fitting device
  • Assist patients with selecting frames appropriate for facial and eye measurements and prescription
  • Fit and adjust eyeglasses for best comfort and visual acuity 
  • Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses
  • Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and other options to suit patient needs
  • Sell goods such as spectacles, sunglasses, and other goods related to eyes in general
  • Educate patients on how to wear and care for eyeglasses
  • Verify that incoming completed spectacles meet quality control and ANSI standards
  • Help answer questions from other staff (apprentices, sales associates) and patients that arise during the optical ordering process

Maintain accurate optical records

  • Enter and maintain electronic records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments
  • Process end of day collection reports and ensure accuracy compared to final count
  • Perform administrative duties such as verifying vision hardware benefits, submitting patient insurance orders, and requesting prior authorizations
  • Assist Optical Manager with scheduling vendor visits, frame selection and return process

Provide Customer and Personal Services

  • Perform customer needs assessment, 
  • Meet quality standards for services, and 
  • Evaluate customer satisfaction

Meets agency participatory expectation

  • Adheres to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested

Performs other related job duties as required



  • Current unrestricted license to practice as dispensing optician in the State of Massachusetts.
  • Ability to perform requested privileges.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services including: marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with colleagues, patients, clients and vendors across the spectrum of diversity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, national origin and immigrant status, religious or spiritual identity, disability (physical, mental, emotional and developmental), veteran status, and/or limited English proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent computer skills – familiarity with OfficeMate and VisionWeb a plus
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.

Job Summary

Under moderate to limited supervision, the Optician will: 

  1. Perform the duties of a licensed dispensing optician in a well-established retail optical shop located within a clinical site and community health center
  2. Advise and educate patients on frames and lens choices following interpretation of each patient’s eyeglass prescriptions
  3. Take accurate measurements for eyewear; adjusting, fitting and making repairs on eyewear
  4. Determine and calculate accurate prices and discounts and collect appropriate fees
  5. Provide patients covered by Third Party insurance with accurate information regarding benefits to ensure proper selection of frames and lenses. Discuss frames/lens extras and options with patients. Inform the customer of any additional charges not covered by their Third Party insurance coverage
  6. Process patient purchases using appropriate equipment, software system and procedures for different payment types and items sold
  7. Order frames, lenses and supplies with Optical Manager within budget parameters from approved vendors
  8.  Be able to effectively handle multiple tasks in fast-paced environment
  9. Fabricate eyewear according to quality guidelines and ANSI standards

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The assigned duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

a. General

  1. Provide superior customer service to all patients and staff in multi-cultural environment
  2. Meet established standards for quality and productivity
  3. Maintain merchandise presentation by stocking and rotating merchandise, removing damaged or out-of-date goods, setting up, cleaning, and organizing product displays, entering and pricing inventory appropriately in software management system 
  4. Assist Optical Manager in administrative tasks such as reconciliation of invoices and physical frame inventory 
  5. Must be a team player, flexible and adaptable based on health center requirements
  6. Demonstrate effective prioritization of day-to-day operations and project work
  7. Keep up-to-date on new products and technologies by attending continuing education courses and reading trade journals 
  8. Participate in any/all training and educational activities necessary to fulfill at least the minimum requirements as specified within department and the completion of any activities necessary for the maintenance of professional affiliations or organizational requirements 
  9. Responsible for appearance and cleanliness of optical shop and finishing lab (includes maintenance of lab equipment) 
  10. Respond to patient inquiries, problems or complaints as outlined in Eye Care Center department policies. 
  11. Train other staff members of department as assigned and needed
  12. All other duties as assigned and needed

Full-Time Optician - Norwood Private Practice

General duties for this position include:

  • Coordinating patient care with the Optometrist and other members of the eye care team

Familiarity with electronic medical records, electronic ordering platforms, office software, and phone systems is desired.


Familiarity with lens edging/finishing is not necessary, but a willingness to learn would be appreciated.


Familiarity with contact lens hygiene and insertion and removal training is helpful.
