PT-FT Optician in Hadley MA

A busy, fast-paced, independently owned optical store in Hadley, MA  is looking for a reliable, friendly and honest licensed optician for part time work -3 days per week with a potential to increase to full time. 

Applicants must be comfortable in fitting, adjusting, repairing and creating eyewear, and a familiarity with using a computer for transactions and orders is a plus. Other responsibilities include scheduling doctor’s patient appointments, understanding basics of insurance, and interpreting and translating eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions.  Office includes large number of frames (over 2000), on-site doctor of optometry, on-site optical lab. Compensation will be based on qualifications.

Licensed Optician

TITLE: Optician (Licensed-MA) Eyes on Worcester, Worcester, MA

BASIC FUNCTION

The Optician assists and educates patients with their selection of eyeglass frames, lenses, and lens enhancements. They are responsible for overseeing all duties in the optical area, including placing orders to maintain inventory, dispensing, lab finishing, and repairs and adjustments for eyeglasses. This position also requires office support and assisting customers with appointments.

DUTEIS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists the customer in selecting frames and lenses that are best suited for their lifestyle, RX and price needs. Suggests improvements and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Takes time to help the customers and answer questions giving them a better understanding of available options. Shows patience and courtesy to indecisive or hard-to-please customers; offers to track down answers to unfamiliar questions or products.
  • Processes eyeglasses, which includes pricing, measuring, collecting money, coding and documenting patient charts.
  • Repairs and adjusts eyeglasses while ensuring patient satisfaction.
  • Maintains clean, organized and stocked eyeglass displays.
  • Demonstrates good product knowledge; takes the initiative to accurately describe the features and benefits of various lenses and frames.
  • May assist patients with the purchase of contact lenses, teach new contact lens wearer how to insert, remove, clean and care for lenses.
  • Manages inventory of contact lenses, eyeglass frames, accessories, tools and office supplies.
  • Perform regular machine maintenance in accordance with maintenance checklist and reports equipment malfunctions to the Office Manager.
  • Meets company safety rules and standards to include following guidelines for hazardous material handling and waste disposal.
  • Control lab inventory through auditing tray management procedures, special orders, check-in of lenses, breakage, returns, and the monitoring of damaged and defective product.
  • Attends continuing education courses to keep informed of new technology and advances in the optical industry.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

As needed, provide office support by answering incoming calls, scheduling appointments and checking patients in for appointments. This job description is meant to be a guideline for coordinating daily activities; other duties will be performed as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position is performed in an office environment and requires periods of sitting or standing that may last one hour or longer, and requires approximately 20% sitting, 60% standing, and 20% walking.
  • Job pressures are high for meeting deadlines, working on multiple tasks at one time, and frequent interruptions.
  • Occupational requirements for this position include the ability to see, hear, and speak clearly and distinctly.
  • The mental ability required is high for reasoning, reading, remembering, writing, and speaking.
  • This position requires the ability to work extended or unusual hours to meet the occasional needs of the practice or in an emergency situation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports to the Office Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • Assists co-workers who have questions or problems; cooperates readily in group efforts.
  • Takes immediate and independent action when needed; suggests improvements; recommends solution to problems; does what is necessary without being prompted or reminded
  • Supervises all Optical related decisions in frame measurement and selection, lab quality, remakes, proper dispensing, final inspection, staff optical training.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY

Skills required of this position include:

  • Ability to sell and service eyeglasses and contact lenses with a commitment to provide excellent customer service.
  • Problem solving issues may involve patient comfort and satisfaction or dealing with irate or frustrated customers. Problems are resolved by making every effort to provide patient satisfaction while maintaining composure and offering appropriate assistance.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Extremely efficient, organized and resourceful.
  • Must be flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment with great interpersonal skills to deal with many personalities.
  • Strong decision making skills.
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members.
