Opticianry Program Scholarships

Jean Palmerini-Hurley Scholarship ($250 - $1,000 per scholarship)

This scholarship was established in memory of Jean Palmerini-Hurley as a tribute to her personal contributions to the field of Opticianry. Jean graduated from the Optical Institute of New England in 1979 and was employed for thirteen years at the Optical House in Wakefield. Jean was a good friend and supporter of the OAM and will be missed by many. This scholarship was established by her many friends and loving family to support others who enter the profession of Opticianry.

George Bourque Scholarship ($500 - $3,000 per scholarship)

This scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Past President George Bourque whose vision to start a degree program for Opticianry in the Commonwealth that would be partnered by the OAM led to the BFIT Opticianry Program. The scholarship commemorates George’s dedication and commitment towards the advancement of the optical profession.

Essilor Scholar ($500 - $2,000 per scholarship)

This scholarship was established in 2009 and is sponsored by Essilor of America in order to support formal educational opportunities in the field of Opticianry. The Essilor Scholar recipient is recognized for their commitment and dedication to academic learning, and to pursuing a career as an optician.

Application for all of the above scholarship awards will be accepted from students who meet the following criteria:

1. Enrolled in an Opticianry program in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

2. Submit a completed official scholarship application on or before the required deadline, August 1st of the year that they are attending the program.

3. Attach to the application two letters of recommendation.

4. All Submissions must be received no later than 11:59pm August 1st

5. Since the award is paid to the college in the Spring (January 1st) semester, students must be full-time status
(12 credit minimum load) and maintain a “C” or above in all core opticianry courses.

Notice of available scholarships shall be sent to the program director of qualified Opticianry programs in Massachusetts. The notice shall include a description of the scholarship program, application forms and instructions for submitting applications.

The scholarship committee will determine the number and amounts of scholarships to be awarded each year. The scholarship committee shall meet each year in August to select the scholarship recipients. The recipients will be notified by September 1 st.

The scholarship awards will be made payable in the form of a check for the full amount of the award to the recipient’s school and directly applied to their tuition. The recipient will be invited as a guest to the Annual OAM Meeting in the Fall and will be presented with a certificate award.
