What is Healthy Vision?

The traditional view of having good vision revolves primarily around the eye test that your optometrists or ophthalmologist conducts.

Recent research shows that there is much more to achieving good vision.  Many factors need to be taken into account when providing you and your family the quality of vision you deserve.   Healthy Vision is a combination of visual acuity, visual comfort and long-term vision protection from harmful UV rays and bright glaring light.  In addition, diet, lifestyle and genetics can play a role in the quality of your overall vision.

Light is essential to vision and the appropriate quantity of light determines just how well and how comfortably you can see.  Too much or too little light can result in eyestrain, squinting or eye fatigue.  During the course of an average day, you may travel from one environment to another, moving from indoors to outdoors perhaps dozens of times.  As you do, lighting conditions change, continually impacting your ability to see clearly and comfortably.  Ideally you would want to experience a balance that would provide optimal visual acuity and comfort at any given time.

What you don’t see may also harm your eyes

While it is important to protect your eyes from too much visible light, it is also important to provide protection from the light you don’t see.  A growing concern for you and your eyecare professional is the need to provide protection against the dangers of the light we don’t see---ultra violet radiation.

Though much UV radiation is filtered by the ozone layer, some of the harmful UVA and UVB radiation does penetrate the atmosphere and, with prolonged exposure, may ultimately lead to a number of eye diseases that can compromise the quality of your vision. Today it is well documented in many scientific studies that exposure to the sun’s harmful UV radiation is a possible factor in the development of sight threatening eye diseases such as Cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. In fact, the American Academy of Optometry released a statement in 1997 clearly indicating the need to protect one’s eyes from the potentially harmful effects of UV radiation.  Most people are well aware of the need to protect their skin from UV radiation, but unfortunately, most are not yet aware of the need to protect their eyes.

So, to achieve long term Healthy Vision you should:

  1. Have a regular eye exam each year
  2. Choose lenses that block 100% UVA and UVB radiation
  3. Ensure your eyecare professional recommends the best lens design for your use (you may need more than one pair of lenses depending upon your lifestyle)
  4. Wear lenses that protect against bright glaring light outdoors
  5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
