Financial Planning Series 101 - Protecting your family’s assets and income.  The following guide will assist you in securing your financial foothold:

*       Verify the adequacy of all your insurances - life, disability, health, property & casualty, liability, and long term care.  Eliminate overlaps, fill the gaps 

*       Draft the NECESSARY estate protection tools (applicable to all) - Wills, Trusts, Health Care Proxy, Durable Power of Attorney.  Put “Homestead Act” protection on your personal residence.

* Check and re-check the beneficiary designations of ALL applicable products - retirement & IRA accounts, life insurance, annuities, wills & trusts.  Add Transfer On Death (TOD) instructions to savings, checking, money market, and non-retirement accounts.

* Establish an emergency reserve cash fund of 3-6 months living expenses.  Put in very liquid vehicles like money market funds with check writing privileges or laddered CD’s.

Once you’ve accomplished all of the above, you will be ready to move on to the next step, starting a savings and investment program.
